Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the Flathead Valley is a gateway to endless adventure. Just to the northeast lies the west entrance of Glacier National Park, where you’ll find glacially carved peaks, crystal-clear rivers and streams, and countless opportunities for rafting, fly fishing, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, and more. True to its Montana roots, the area is still ranch country, with wide-open spaces perfect for horseback riding and guided tours. The valley gets its name from Flathead Lake—the largest freshwater lake in the Pacific Northwest—spanning 70 miles in length and 30 miles in width. It’s a paradise for boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, camping, and nearly every water-based activity imaginable. Beyond Flathead Lake, you’ll find Whitefish Lake just northwest of the town of Whitefish, along with countless other lakes and rivers waiting to be explored. In winter, the valley transforms into a snow-covered playground with two ski resorts: Whitefish Mountain Resort, offering over 3,000 skiable acres and 11 chairlifts, and Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, perched above the head of Flathead Lake. Needless to say—you’ll never run out of things to do in the Flathead Valley. Here are a few of our favorites.
